-   Civil rights demonstrations occur throughout the country; Dr. Martin Luther King delivers his famous speech;
-   Pres. Kennedy is assassinated (Nov. 22) in Dallas; Vice Pres. Johnson is sworn in as president;
-   Polaroid introduces color film;

-   Color TV is relayed via satellite for the 1st time;
-   Hitchcock movies are popular;
-   Popular TV series; Twilight Zone, Bonanza, Gunsmoke,

1962

-   Bob Dylan, folk rock singer, achieves recognition with his song  "Blowin' in the Wind"
-   Marilyn Monroe dies
-   Johnny Carson begins as host of The Tonight Show
-   John Glenn becomes the 1st American to orbit the Earth;  3 orbits cover 81,000 miles in less than 5 hours;
-  New U.S. military command (Military Assistance Command)  is set up in South Vietnam.
